If you’ve lived in Bucks County for any significant period of time, you’re aware of the complications that accompany a heavy snowfall: clearing roads and sidewalks, making sure pipes don’t freeze, stocking up on food. For the owners of Bucks County swimming pools, it’s also important to take measures to treat and protect your pool.
Whether you’ve only recently installed your pool and are unsure of how to recover from an intense storm, or you’re simply unaccustomed to handling such extremes as this latest storm, we’re here to help. Here is what you should be aware of before and after a blizzard:
- Excess weight on the cover – Heavy snow resting on the cover of your pool can lead to a couple forms of damage. It can cause the anchors of the safety cover to pop off, which may allow for pollutants to infiltrate your pool. Excess weight can also cause damage to the coping of your pool. Do your best to remove heavy snow manually in this situation. If there is too much for you to remove, cut the cord and let the cover fall as a last resort.
- Avoid water displacement – Water displacement is one of the most common swimming pool issues during the winter. In order to protect against it, double-check your water level when a heavy snowstorm is in the forecast. If you measure the water level and it is lower than when you closed the pool, you probably need to remove some snow.
- Take care when removing snow – Be extremely careful when removing heavy snow from your pool. Do not use a shovel for this process. Instead, use a long broom to push the snow off the top of the pool. Alternatively, you can use a roof rake to pull it off, or even a snowblower for lighter snow. However, for lighter snowfall, it’s usually best to ignore it.
The most important aspect of owning a pool during the winter is staying vigilant and making sure nothing is out of the ordinary. As long as you properly winterized your pool, you’ll usually have nothing to worry about. However, complications can arise in the case of extreme storms, such as the one that just hit Bucks County and the rest of the Northeast.
