Pool owners, rejoice! The cold, dark days of winter have finally ceased, and the first signs of spring have begun.
That means it’s time to start planning for the reopening of your Morrisville backyard pool as the days slowly get warmer and warmer. This is one of the most exciting times of the year for all pool owners.
But as any responsible pool owner knows, the warm weather doesn’t mean you can simply remove the cover and dive in. It’s important to take the necessary maintenance steps to have your pool ready to go for the first day of summer. Here are some reminders for how to prepare your pool:
- Drain, remove, and clean the pool cover – The first step to opening your pool is taking care of the pool cover. First, drain the cover of any water it may have accumulated, ideally with the use of a submersible pump. Next, remove the cover from the pool. Finally, clean the cover and store it in your pool house.
- Raise the water level – Use a hose to bring your water level back to its normal level.
- De-winterize your pool – Now it’s time to undo all the winterizing steps you (hopefully) did when you closed your pool. This means reconnecting the pool equipment, removing winter plugs and reattaching drain plugs, clearing antifreeze from drain lines, and removing winterizing plugs from skimmer and return lines.
- Turn equipment back on – Next, it’s time to turn on the equipment to get your pool functioning again. Make sure to prime the pump, turn on the circulation and filtration system, and open the air relief valve on your filter.
- Treat your water to prevent staining – Various metals may have built up over the winter which can lead to staining and discoloration. Add a compound such as Metal Free to protect against this – use 1 liter for every 20,000 gallons of water in your pool. After adding this, allow your circulation and filtration systems to run for at least two hours.
- Test and adjust the chemistry – Make sure to test for your pH, total alkalinity, and chlorine levels using a test kit. Your pH should be between 7.4 and 7.6, total alkalinity between 80 and 120 ppm, and chlorine between 2.0 to 4.0 ppm.
- Brush and vacuum the pool – Take care of any accumulated dirt or debris from the offseason.
After following these steps, your pool should be good to go and ready for opening. Enjoy the long, hot days of summer in your backyard oasis.
