Pros and Cons of Keeping Your Pool Open Year-Round
Every year, there comes a sad fall day for pool owners. The weather has been cold for a while and shows no signs of returning to summer glory. Leaves are starting to fall faster, creating more frustrating cleaning chores. It’s time to close and winterize the swimming pool. You may have heard of some people skipping this step altogether and opting to keep their pools open year-round. Today, we’re going to discuss the pros and cons of that approach.
Pros:
- One less big job. Winterizing your pool can seem like a huge undertaking. Keeping your pool open year-round can be one way to avoid this task.
- Aesthetic landscaping. A closed pool can be somewhat of an eyesore in your backyard. A pool of water amidst a dusting of pristine snow is much more beautiful.
Cons:
- More work in the long run. Although you save a bit of time by avoiding the winterizing task, the incremental upkeep required to maintain a sanitary pool year-round will ultimately prove much greater.
- Electricity cost. Keeping your pool on all winter will, of course, cost a lot of electricity.
- Freezing and damages. Freezing of certain water lines can lead to major plumbing/piping issues. Keeping the pool open in freezing temperatures can leave you vulnerable to that.
In this case, the severity of the cons outweighs the benefits of the pros. We recommend that people cover and winterize their pools every fall in order to avoid these issues.
