Swimming Pool Plaster: What to Expect
- Drain the pool
- Clean the pool. We’ll make sure there is no oil, dirt or any stains on the bottom or sides of the pool. We’ll then clean and prep the pool to be re-plastered by using an acid wash and pressure cleaning.
- Look for hollow areas. We’ll intricately check the pool for hollow areas, breaking them out and prepping the area to receive a new surface.
- Remove old pool tile or prep existing tile. If we’re also replacing pool tile, we’ll remove the old. If not, we’ll cut around the tiles with concrete saws and prep the edges so the plaster will bond to existing tile.
- Install new pool tile. If necessary. We’ll install your new tile as well as any pool accessories such as skimmers and main drains. If not installing new we’ll complete the same prep around existing features as was completed with the pool tile.
- Apply the bond coat. This is the most important step in the swimming pool plaster process. This step ensures that the new pool plaster bonds to any existing plaster, creating a seamless pool plaster.
- Apply plaster to all surfaces of pool. We apply 3/8″ to 1/2″ of plaster to all pool surfaces, and spend a lot of time checking and double checking that all of the pool surfaces receive a hard trowel finish.
- Brush pool surfaces. We’ll make sure to vacuum away any remaining plaster dust
- Refill pool with clean water. This is another important step to help ensure the pool plaster cures correctly and the pool chemicals are balanced. This will help ensure that your new pool plaster will stay fresh for years. Note that keeping pool plaster fresh and strong also requires dedicated ongoing pool cleaning and maintenance.
