Swimming pool self leveling sealant is an important pool product that contractors use to ensure the pool is level anGred remains level well after the job is complete. The team from Coronado’s Pool Renovations, Inc. is here to explain this pool caulking product and why it is needed for your pool in Pennsylvania this summer.
The Need for Caulk
Pools need to have caulk installed in them between the expansion joint around the entirety of the pool. The expansion joint is what lands between the edge of the pool and the deck or concrete around it. Caulk is needed for two reasons. The first is that the caulk will help to keep water out of the expansion joint. Water is bound to get out of the pool and on the concrete or deck, but you need to keep it out of the expansion joint so it doesn’t freeze during the winter. The second reason is to prevent sand and other debris from getting inside the joint.
When Should the Caulk be Replaced?
A question our team faces often revolves around when the caulk should be replaced in the expansion joint. When you notice cracks in the caulking, or that it has pulled away from either the pool or the deck/concrete, it should be removed and replaced with brand new caulk. The best caulking projects can last a good five years. It’s possible to patch the caulk in the expansion joint for temporary fixes, especially if the caulk has not deteriorated, but should eventually be completely replaced within five to 10 years.
What Caulk is Used?
So, what type of caulk is used for swimming pools? We only use elastomeric sealants that are suited for outdoor use when applying swimming pool self leveling sealant. Self leveling sealant is the best option of the two available because it finds ways to level itself after being applied. The other option is gun grade, which needs to be leveled upon installation.
